Near-term Steps to Interstellar

The annual Canopus Award features:

  • Contest Categories: These categories are for Original Works. Submissions will be accepted in short fiction and short non-fiction categories on the 2016 theme “Near Steps to Interstellar”. There is also an addition of college categories in short fiction and short non-fiction on the same theme.
  • Award Categories: These categories are for Previously Published works. Nominations will be accepted in long and short form fiction as well as popular non-fiction.
  • An Award Recognition Event: Winners announced and recognized at the Canopus Awards Night in Spring 2017. Winners will receive the physical Canopus Award as well as a Professional 100 Year Starship Membership and other prizes.

The Award will be given in the following seven categories:

PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED WORKS

  • Long-form Fiction (Novel length – over 40,000 words – previously professionally published)
  • Short-form Fiction (Short Story, Flash Fiction – 1,000 to 40,000 words – previously professionally published)
  • Popular Non-Fiction (1,000 to 40,000 words – previously professionally published)

ORIGINAL WORKS

  • Original Short-form Fiction (1,000 to 6,000 words – must be original and NOT previously published – on the theme “Near Steps to Interstellar”)
  • Original Short-form Nonfiction (1,000 to 6,000 words – must be original and NOT previously published – on the theme “Near Steps to Interstellar”)
  • Original College Short-form Fiction (1,000 to 5,000 words – must be original and NOT previously published – on the theme “Near Steps to Interstellar”)
  • Original College Short-form Nonfiction (1,000 to 5,000 words – must be original and NOT previously published – on the theme “Near Steps to Interstellar”)

Our Previously Published Fiction and Non-fiction award selection has two stages:

  • Open nomination. The public can nominate works here at canopus.100yss.org. The open period for nominations is June 27 through September 30, 2016 [EXTENDED DEADLINE].
  • Final judging. A judging panel selected of scientists, writers, cultural influencers, and experts will vote on the final winner in each of the two categories.

Our Original and College Original Fiction and Non-fiction award selection has two stages:

  • Open submission. The public can submit works via our website here at canopus.100yss.org. The open period for original submissions is June 27 through September 30, 2016 [EXTENDED DEADLINE] and for college original submissions through October 15, 2016 [EXTENDED DEADLINE]
  • Review and finalists determination. The 100 Year Starship staff will review all submissions and a list of the best five in each of the two categories (short fiction and short non-fiction). Final judging. A judging panel selected of scientists, writers, cultural influencers, and experts will vote on the final winner in each of the two original submission categories.

A good science fiction story should be able to predict not the automobile but the traffic jam.
